Recently, the National Hemp Industry Technology System conducted large-scale demonstration yield measurements of new domestic flax varieties and dryland farming techniques in Xinyuan and Zhaosu counties in Xinjiang. Experts from the Xinjiang Society of Agricultural Sciences, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shihezi University, Ili Normal University, and the Ili Prefecture Agricultural Technology Extension Center formed an evaluation team to ensure the authority and impartiality of the results.
After rigorous evaluation by the expert team, the new domestic flax variety “Huaxing 3″ performed exceptionally well, achieving a yield of 532 kilograms per mu, a 13.8% increase over the currently cultivated local variety, demonstrating its strong advantages. In the integrated demonstration area for dryland flax technology, the yield exceeded 562 kilograms per mu, a nearly 10% increase over conventional cultivation. This achievement not only breaks the local flax yield record but also sets a new record for flax yield in the Ili River Valley, providing valuable practical experience for dryland flax cultivation in my country.
The flax industry has diverse value propositions, but my country faces a dependency challenge in its development.
Flax, a crop with both historical heritage and modern value, is both an ancient natural fiber crop and a key oilseed crop, occupying a diverse and increasingly crucial position in the global economy and society.
The value of flax is fully demonstrated in its applications. Flax fiber, with its unique properties of cooling, breathability, moisture wicking, and antibacterial properties, has become a preferred raw material for high-end textiles, highly favored by the high-end textile market. Byproducts such as flax staple fibers and flax scraps are also efficiently utilized in a wide range of industrial applications, including automotive interior panels, thermal and acoustic insulation, and industrial fabrics, maximizing resource utilization. Flaxseed oil, recognized worldwide as a healthy edible oil and health supplement ingredient, is widely used in the food, health supplement, and cosmetics industries, and market demand continues to rise.
my country holds a significant position in the global flax industry, serving as a core country for flax cultivation, processing, and consumption. Its flax fiber processing alone accounts for nearly 70% of the global market share, and the profitability of its flax spinning industry is unique within my country’s textile industry. However, the development of my country’s flax industry also faces a severe bottleneck: import dependence for flax varieties exceeds 80%, and import dependence for flax raw materials exceeds 90%, severely restricting the independent, controllable, and high-quality development of the industry.
Full-chain technological research and development efforts are underway to achieve “three increases and one reduction” in frontier flax production.
Since the 14th Five-Year Plan, the national flax industry technology system has proactively integrated the strengths of flax-related stations and their supporting organizations, prioritizing the core mission of “breaking the foreign monopoly on flax varieties and enhancing the technological level of the entire supply chain through innovation.” In the Ili River Valley, a key flax-growing region, a full-chain technological research and development system integrating “variety, technology, and agricultural machinery” has been established.
This system integrates multiple key technologies, including stress-resistant breeding and supporting cultivation techniques, biological regulation, green pest and weed control, and full mechanization. Through the coordinated application of these technologies, the frontier dryland flax industry has achieved remarkable results: “Three Increases and One Reduction”: significant increases in yield per unit area, steady improvements in product quality, and continuous improvements in industrial profitability, while significantly reducing dependence on foreign varieties and raw materials.
In terms of specific benefits, the application of the new technology has yielded significant results. In addition to increasing fiber production, seed yield also increased by 35%, effectively solving the problem of seed conservation for farmers and reducing planting costs. The developed “top-control and center-of-gravity elevation” technology, through scientifically adjusting plant morphology, has enabled the flax to reach a working length of 76 cm, steadily exceeding the standard for high-end textile raw materials and laying the foundation for my country’s flax fiber to enter the high-end market. Economic benefit calculations show that after implementing the new technology, pesticide use per mu decreased by 30%, reducing environmental pressure and saving planting costs. Mechanized harvesting efficiency increased by 50%, significantly reducing labor input. Ultimately, the overall benefit per mu increased by 128 yuan, effectively increasing farmers’ income.
Achievements Demonstrate the System’s Value; Future Plans Support Industrial Upgrading
This breakthrough in the flax industry in Xinjiang is a prime example of how the National Hemp Industry Technology System leverages the collaborative strengths of national stations to advance flax production technology and ensure the safety of raw materials for national hemp spinning. In recent years, the National Hemp Industry Technology System has continuously focused on addressing the pain points of the hemp industry, addressing shortcomings, expanding applications, reducing costs, and increasing efficiency. This has yielded a series of fruitful results, providing solid scientific and technological support for the stable development of my country’s hemp industry.
Looking ahead, during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the National Hemp Industry Technology System will further expand its research scope and deepen technological research and development. We will prioritize large-scale yield increases for hemp crops on marginal lands, such as saline-alkali land, arid regions, areas contaminated by heavy metals, and hilly and mountainous terrain, fully tapping the agricultural production potential of marginal lands. We will also focus on overcoming key technical challenges in fully mechanized hemp production in complex terrain conditions, thereby enhancing the scale and modernization of the industry. We will also deepen research and development of key technologies for the comprehensive and refined utilization of hemp crops, expand the application areas and added value of hemp products, and inject greater impetus into the optimization and upgrading of my country’s hemp industry.
